Eating healthy on £10 a week

I follow a vegan, gluten free, nut free diet and as a student I’m trying to spend as little money as possible. Here are my tips on how to eat healthy and on a tight budget!

  • Meal plan and write a shopping list

This way you wont get sidetracked in stires and will onkly buy exactly what you need. When you meal plan you’re also less likely to have food go off and have to throw stuff away which would be a further waste of money.

  • Compare prices

Sites like MySupermarket are great ways to compare prices of different items. You’re also able to see what deals each sumpermarket currently has and sort products by “price per unit” so you can see exactly what products offer the best value for money.

  • Be prepared to shop around

Depending on where you live and your circumstances this might not be feasible but when I make a shopping list, I will go online and see where its cheapest to buy each item and then visit each store rather than do all my shopping in one place. If you want to get all your shopping in one go then you can build a shopping list on MySupermaket and then compare the price of the overall shopping list in each store and figure out which shop is cheaper.

  • Buy your own tea/coffee so that you don’t end up buying it out. This can save you £100s over the course of the year!

  • Check to see where you can use your student discount. For example, Co-op have a 10% student discount.

I personally do almost all my shopping in Lidl as the prices are really cheap. Here’s an example of a week’s shop which will usually come to between £7-£12 a week:

  • Spinach

  • Kale

  • Broccoli

  • Courgette

  • Carrots

  • Hummus

  • Kidney beans

  • Baby potatoes

  • Bananas

  • Porridge (technically not gluten free)

  • Brown rice

  • Peppers

  • Peas

  • Onion

  • Garlic

  • Chopped tomatoes

  • ginger
